Reverse phone lookup is the process of looking up details of a person or an institution listed against a particular phone number. This is opposed a regular phone book or a reverse phone directory where phone numbers are listed against names listed in an alphabetical order.

Traditionally, reverse phone lookups have been used by people in the government agencies to access details of individuals and institutions during an emergency. As such, access to these databases was restricted, and was limited only to those in authority. However, with the passage of time, and the advent of the cellular phones, most of the service providers became private parties and corporations. As such, access to such reverse phone lookup is no more restricted to government agencies.

In fact, most of the utilities of reverse phone lookups are today made by private players. For example, many manufacturers and traders use reverse phone lookups to reach out to customers directly. In this process, a trader or a manufacturer initially studies the data listed against phone numbers. Then after screening and filtering, they identify people who can be their potential customers. Once such customers are identified, such traders and manufacturers reach out to them directly via phone calls.

This process is beneficial both to the buyer and the sellers, i.e. the customers. Due to being able to reach out to the customers directly, a lot of intermediaries are removed, and hence the seller becomes able to offer his or her product or service at a low cost. Because of this low cost, the demand usually goes up, and the sales volume increases. This leads to increased profitability for the seller. Similarly, the customers are also benefitted because of the fact that they are able to buy a product or a service for a much lesser price than what they would have paid in a local store. All this becomes possible because of reverse phone lookup.

Reverse phone lookup facility is also used by debt collecting agencies to contact loan defaulters who’ve changed their contact details. Nowadays, there are several online portals, who, for a small charge allow interested parties to do a reverse phone look up in their well maintained database.
